As a photographer based in the Algarve, I’ve explored countless breathtaking locations, but there’s something truly special about Lagos. Every time I visit, I discover a new story waiting to be captured—whether in its rugged cliffs, golden beaches, or vibrant streets. If you’re looking for inspiration or planning a photoshoot in Lagos, let me take you on a journey through my favorite spots.

Discovering the Magic of Lagos
Lagos is more than just a beautiful coastal town; it’s a dreamland for photographers. The mix of dramatic landscapes, charming old-town streets, and golden-hour perfection makes it an endless playground for creativity. Every time I set out with my camera, I find new angles, new light, and new moments to capture. Here are some of the places that have left a lasting impression on me.

1. Ponta da Piedade: Nature’s Masterpiece
📍 Location: South of Lagos, with towering cliffs and intricate rock formations.
🕐 Best Time: Sunrise or sunset for dramatic golden hues, or the blue hour for a moody, cinematic effect.
My Experience
One of my most unforgettable shoots was at Ponta da Piedade. I arrived just as the first rays of sunrise painted the cliffs in warm tones. Standing on the edge of the viewpoint, I was mesmerized by the play of light and shadow on the rugged formations. Later, I took a kayak out onto the water, capturing the caves and arches from a low angle, where the reflections danced on the sea’s surface.
Photography Tips
Try both high-angle shots from the cliffs and close-ups from a kayak for a fresh perspective.
Use a polarizing filter to bring out the rich blues of the ocean and reduce glare.
2. Praia do Camilo: A Hidden Gem

📍 Location: A picturesque beach accessed by a wooden staircase.🕐 Best Time: Early morning for soft light and fewer crowds, or sunset for vibrant colors.
My Experience
Descending the wooden staircase at Praia do Camilo felt like stepping into a secret paradise. The golden cliffs framed the clear turquoise water, and every angle provided a perfect composition. The soft light at sunrise gave the scene a magical glow, while sunset painted the sky in purples and oranges.
Photography Tips
Take advantage of the staircase—it offers unique framing opportunities.
Arrive early to capture the peaceful atmosphere before the crowds arrive.
I shot here for a solo portrait session of a traveller for her photographic book was a model
3. Lagos Old Town: A Walk Through History
📍 Location: The historic heart of Lagos, with cobblestone streets and colorful facades.
🕐 Best Time: Sunrise or sunset for warm, soft lighting, or the blue hour for atmospheric shots.
My Experience
Lagos Old Town feels like a living storybook. I’ve spent hours wandering its narrow streets, capturing the charming details—vintage tiles, colorful doors, and locals going about their day. One of my favorite shots was of the iconic green-tiled house, framed by the blooming Jacaranda trees in spring.
Photography Tips
Focus on textures: cobblestone streets, tiled facades, and rustic details.
Use a wide aperture during the blue hour to create a soft, dreamy look.
I shot here an influencer guy from England for his feed , he wanted to showcase his travels and wasn't on a budget
4. Praia da Dona Ana: A Cinematic Backdrop

📍 Location: A golden beach surrounded by limestone cliffs
.🕐 Best Time: Early morning or late afternoon for soft, golden light.
My Experience
Praia da Dona Ana is a place I return to again and again. Whether it’s the misty morning air creating an ethereal scene or the afternoon sun highlighting the textures of the cliffs, it always feels like I’m stepping into a movie set.
Photography Tips
Try panoramic shots to capture the scale of the cliffs.
Use a tripod for long exposures to capture the movement of the waves.
I shoot here very often small families photography and couples for engagements and sometimes secret proposals , its hard to shoot when I want with clients this is a bit late on the beach it still worked well.
5. Praia dos Estudantes: A Coastal Hideaway

Location: A small beach featuring a natural tunnel carved through the rock.
🕐 Best Time: Early morning for soft light and an intimate setting.
My Experience
Praia dos Estudantes is a hidden gem. The tunnel carved through the rock creates a perfect natural frame, and the beach’s small size gives it a cozy, secluded feel. I loved experimenting with angles here, using the arch to guide the viewer’s eye toward the ocean.
I usually shoot in this spot for secret proposals
Photography Tips
Use the rock tunnel as a natural frame for your composition.
Early morning light brings out the textures and prevents harsh shadows.
6. Lagos Marina: The Urban Pulse of Lagos

Location: A lively waterfront with boats and modern architecture.
🕐 Best Time: Late afternoon or early evening for warm reflections on the water.
My Experience
Switching from natural landscapes to urban energy, Lagos Marina offers a refreshing contrast. One of my favorite shots was capturing the sunset reflecting off the boats and modern buildings, creating a perfect blend of light, water, and movement.
Photography Tips
Capture reflections in the water for a unique perspective.
Experiment with shutter speeds to blur movement or freeze the action.
I shot here for a famous italian brand FAY we sailed early at sunrise to showcase a Jacket great job fun with a nice team and an amazing boat
7. Igreja de Santa Maria de Lagos: A Moment of Reflection

Location: Central square of Lagos Old Town.
🕐 Best Time: Sunrise for peaceful lighting and stunning reflections.
My Experience
There’s something serene about photographing Igreja de Santa Maria in the early morning. I once caught its reflection in a still puddle after a night of rain, creating an almost dreamlike composition.
Photography Tips
Use reflections to create depth and symmetry in your shot.
Soft morning light enhances the textures of the historic facade.
Hidden Gems of Lagos
Beyond the well-known landmarks, Lagos has plenty of secret spots that have become my personal favorites.

Praia do Canavial
Location: A secluded beach near Ponta da Piedade. My Experience: This untouched, rugged coastline is perfect for capturing raw, natural beauty.
Tip: Visit in the early morning for soft light and a peaceful atmosphere, is known to be a nudist beach
Final Thoughts
Lagos is a photographer’s paradise—whether you’re capturing the beauty of Ponta da Piedade, the charm of Old Town, or the hidden corners only a wanderer will find. Every time I return, I see something new, something different, and something worth capturing. If you’re planning to visit, bring your camera, explore at your own pace, and let Lagos surprise you.
